Artistic Statement
When I think of dance, I think about the connection between physical communication and philosophical expression. How can the intensity and tone of my movement portray the emotion or story I am expressing? Everything I create is rooted in my experiences, making my choreography an extension of my inner dialogue.
Growing up in a musically inclined family, I have a gift for feeling the compositional layers of music or sound within my body. This guides my choreographic process as I move to different beats and flow to the music while creating movement. I don’t have a distinct dance style that I revert to, so my voice is a combination of many.
When creating a story or movement phrase, I believe there are no absolutes. There are always deeper understandings you can dive into when creating or performing movement. I consistently find myself asking why questions. Why are we transitioning from one phrase to the next? Why do we acknowledge each other in this part? I push my dancers to find the story while they're moving through the space. I believe body language is understood across all cultures, and by showing clear representations of expression, we can better convey the intended messages.
When in the process of presenting my movement, I get inspired by other’s artistic voices. Whether I am performing with or guiding other dancers through my movement, I like to transform the tone, choreography, or communication of my vision to cater to the dancer’s movement strengths. By mixing personal experience and musical inspiration, I strive to create raw, natural movement that connects your mind and body.
